Critical Reflective Essay

This critical reflective account will discuss the development of me as a leader and manager within my health profession and my team, over the course of The Mary Seacole Programme. I have identified my leadership strengths and my personal development. This course has encouraged me to reflect upon my vision and style of management, and has allowed me to further identify areas that I will need to enhance into making me a more versatile leader.

Developing my leadership skills is important for me given the circumstances that as a first time leader whose job role previously didn’t involve having a team managed by myself, to a position now who manages or interact extensively with staff and patients daily, therefore during my time undertaking

Michael A West (2012) states that there are two areas of team functioning, task and social reflexivity, the team reflexivity questionnaire was produced by West to help assess how effectively a team functions, to measure the levels of task and social reflexivity in my team, I decided to ask all of my team members to complete this questionnaire. Upon reflecting back to my team, I was shocked with the results I decided to feedback to each team member during a one to one session, so they could feel confident with being honest with me, after the one to ones, I held a group feedback session, using the skills learnt from the Mary seacole we managed to have a productive discussion from this we were able to reflect together, asked them to evaluate myself as a leader, and how I could change, the feedback from my team was positive, I now have clear objectives, and from this I have set clear objectives for my team referring to SMART(Specific, Measureable, Action Oriented, Realistic and Time bound), the most aspiring feedback comment from this session, was that they have never had a leader who has applied the skills that I have learnt from the Mary Seacole Programme, after this one session it was apparent they felt engaged and motivated as a team and on an individual basis, as I did as …show more content…

During my team appraisal sessions I set each team member a clear understanding of the requirements of their role this enabled them to have a more constructive performance.
The leadership program explored the areas of the importance of getting the process right, the course stated ‘When you do, the benefits include
1. Increasing trust and confidence in the team member and manager relationship
2. Improving employee productivity and quality of work through increased engagement and motivation
