Countertransference

When interacting with others, individuals have the tendency to associate their reactions, thoughts, and feelings, that occur during a conversation, to other individuals they know or experiences they have had. For example, I may meet a girl in a bar who reminds me of my ex-girlfriend, and thus, I cannot give her my undivided attention because I am too distracted with her similarities to my ex-girlfriend. When this phenomenon occurs in therapy, it is referred to as countertransference. Freud (1910) argued that, when it does occur in therapy, countertransference can have a negative effect on the therapist’s ability to treat the client. Therefore, as future therapists, it is essential to be able to recognize when countertransference occurs …show more content…
This individual and I coached together for two seasons and were fortunate enough to experience a high amount of success. During our time together, I noticed how much effort and passion he/she put into every coaching responsibility. Whether it was drills, pep talks, coaching third base, arguing with the umpire, etc., he/she went above and beyond any other coach I had ever seen. Moreover, after getting to know her/him, I began to learn just how important playing sports was to him/her while he/she was growing up. Specifically, he/she told me several times that playing sports was one of the only things that made them feel truly happy while growing up. Therefore, over the course of two years, I was able to notice how difficult it was for him/her to be a coach as opposed to a player. The loss of that time in their life was something he/she significantly struggled with when it occurred, and was still struggling with it during our time together. My reactions to the coach, then, were almost identical to my reactions to Ben. I felt pity because it was obvious that the coach truly missed playing and competing, so he/she took up coaching to cope, as it was as close as they could possibly get to the game. I felt

Countertransference in this case refers to a therapists or professionals reactions toward the patient. This can consists of a redirection of a psychotherapists feelings towards a client. Countertransference is the reactions and responses based on the counselor’s personal issues and previous experiences that the counselor has towards the clients. Countertransference may not be completely negative in all therapy but when it is negative is when the counselor projects onto the client his or her won unresolved feelings or issues that may come up as a result of treating a client. Countertransference happens when the counselor loses objectivity and becomes angry or overwhelmed when hearing a client’s story. In Love’s executioner, countertransference I believe can be evident in a couple of the case studies. But in the same case study mentioned above, “Fat Lady” Yalom discusses countertransference.…

The in the article, “Paradoxical Effects of Thought Suppression” researchers explored the hypothesis that thought suppression is difficult for people to do and that suppressed thoughts can return to consciousness with minimal prompting, perhaps becoming obsessive preoccupations (Wegner, 1987.) To explore this, they conducted two experiments where they asked subjects to verbalize their stream of consciousness for 5 minute periods, asked subject groups to alternatively express or suppress thoughts of a “white bear”, and record occurrences of “white bear” thoughts during each period via verbal mentions or bell rings. Researchers found that thought suppression attempts resulted in a rebound effect that was especially pronounced when subjects were…

Dedication is the one word that I can use to describe Jim Polite, my cross country and track and field coach my four years of high school. As I ran back to my car on Tuesday, while the rain was falling so hard that cars had to stop and pull-over to the side of the rode, I noticed one thing and that was that Polite was standing in the hard rain, still watching and making sure his athletes are performing well. This moment made me realizes that an interview was not going to satisfy what I needed to know about this man. So for the next few hours or so I stood by and observed what he was doing, saying, and how he was interacting with his athletes and coaches. Running was already something that was difficult for all the athletes, whether or not they were good or bad, and it wasn’t something that was easy to get into because it required a great amount of tolerance for pain.…

In order to really gain awareness of this phenomenon, I had to first truly understand what it meant. Greenson (as cited in Cartwright, 2011) stated that transference is, “the experiencing of feelings, drives, attitudes, fantasies, and defenses toward a person in the present, which are inappropriate to the person and are a repetition, a displacement of reactions originating in regard to significant persons of early childhood,” (p. 114). In regard to countertransference, Storr (as cited in Cartwright) stated “Freud conceptualised ‘countertransference’ as arising from the client’s influence on the psychoanalyst’s unconscious feelings, a manifestation of the psychoanalyst’s unresolved issues, and a potential impediment to treatment,” (p. 115). Understanding when these two concepts occur, and how to react, will be important to maintaining an ethical relationship with my client. I do not have any doubt that certain clients may affect me more than others, and there are going to be certain stories that I relate with on a whole different…

In this paper I will describe and contrast two of the major theories in psychology, the Psychoanalytical Theory and the Cognitive Theory. I personally believe that an integration between them would best suit my future approach to counseling. Therefore I will present the main theoretical concepts and psychotherapeutic techniques, and their differences and similarities in order to understand to what extent they can be integrated. Sigmund Freud, the founder and major exponent of Psychoanalytical Theory firmly believed that that experiences in childhood play a crucial part in development and personality, influencing adult functioning. He expressed that a person is driven by urges that emanate from the unconscious, leading them to repeat patterns…
