Since it is believed that being twenty-one or older, that the consumption of alcohol should be as serious as purchasing a handgun, or even adopting a child. Contrary to popular belief, drinking alcohol is an enjoyable activity by many. Drinking doesn’t not mean go out, and get wasted, and then do something irrational. At times, it is appropriate to drink a glass of wine with family members or coworkers. It’s a conversation starter. The United States is one of the only places that has controversial limit on the legal drinking age. Instead of limiting what one can do, why not give the people what they want? Perhaps, one would learn from our neighbors, the Europeans. They have a much lower standard to drinking. Children as young as sixteen can indulge in a lesser content of alcohol, such as beer. Teenagers are already known for a rebellious behavior. Making substances illegal only feeds them in curiosity. If it were legal, eventually people would just get tired of it and use it more responsibly. Sadly, the twenty-one age limit has not stopped underage children from drinking. It is believed that underaged drinking is a gateway to an increase in extreme binge drinking. Those under twenty-one find ways around the legal drinking age. The drinking age has not eliminated underage drinking. It has caused it to be pushed to many dangerous degrees. The black market for alcohol will forever be available. The issue with underaged drinking is that the police are not able to stop it. The only thing they can do is contain and further protect those in harms way. Police are understanding that the more they are involved, the more reclusive underaged drinking becomes. It’s the abuse of alcohol police are trying to capture.
