They could own property only if they were not married, and they had no brothers. But the Hindu Women’s Right to Property changed that. According to Selvaraj Narayanan on OMICS International, the Hindu Women’s Right to Property “is specifically enacted that its provisions will be applicable to the property of any Hindu dying intestate before the state. The act has no application to properties situated in foreign countries or to agricultural lands in governor’s provinces or to properties which did not belong to the deceased in his own right. The act applies only when a Hindu dies intestate either partially or wholly. It does not apply where he has disposed off all his property.” Selvaraj Narayanan also states that “the act provides that the widow shall be entitled to a share in the inheritance along with such persons. It also gives them a very high rank in the line of heirs that they are permitted to share the inheritance along with the widow and the sons, grandsons and great grand sons of the deceased superseding even his daughter and grand daughter’s sons.” This means that if a Hindu man dies, his wife can now get a share of the inheritance. This only works, however, if the man disposes of his property beforehand. While this act gives Hindu women a lot more rights, there are a few setbacks to this act. Time’s article titled Iceland Legalizes Equal Pay For Men and Women states that Iceland has been ranked the globe’s most gender-equal country by the World Economic Forum for about 9 years in a row. About half of Iceland’s parliamentarians are women, and they have had a female President for about 20 years. Wage differences based on gender is an enormous problem around the world, In the European Union, a political and economical union that has about 28 states in it that are all primarily in Europe, women earn about 84 cents for every dollar a man earns. In the United States of America, women get paid about 80.5 cents for every man’s dollar, but the gap is higher for American women of color. Women getting paid less than men for doing the same job is detrimental to women’s health. If women get paid less, they have less money to spend in necessities like food, water and shelter. Without those necessities, women are forced into
