Kent is banished as well because he spoke out against the king. By banishing Cordelia and Kent, King Lear believes that all of the choices that he made thus far were harmless and would have no future consequences, but in fact, they created more than anyone ever thought was possible. Lear’s rash decision resulted in Regan and Goneril gaining a new sense of power from their father because of the ownership that they now had of his kingdom. Regan and Goneril decide since they now have their portions of land that will take away rule from Lear as quickly as possible because they believe that he has been unreasonable with Cordelia. Lear decides that he will reside with Goneril, but Goneril feels that she is being offended by her father. Goneril decides that she wants Lear to feel uncomfortable and unhappy in her home so that he will go live with Regan instead. Lear is offended when Goneril tells him that she feels offended by his action and his knights as well. King Lear himself then says that Goneril is acting ridiculous and that her offenses toward him make Cordelia’s look small. When first arriving at the wedding, everything was going well and the children were having a great time, although they did experience some culture shock, for example, the chicken with its head twisted off. The real obstacles began when Amelia, Debbie, and Mikey were trying to return to the United States with Amelia’s nephew, Santiago. When they arrive at the border, ready to enter the United States, the border police ask for the necessary credentials to enter the country and Amelia gives it to the officer with no difficulty. What happens in the following scenes is unfathomable. When the officer returns with the children’s passports, he starts to give Amelia a hard time about entering the country because he doesn’t believe that Amelia is the children’s aunt like she said she was. Santiago starts to grow impatient with the officer and decides that enough is enough and that he is just going to escape the officers by driving through the barricade. When he does this, it leads to a search for him, Amelia in the children in the desert. Amelia and the children are dropped off by Santiago in the middle of the desert because he thinks that they will be safer there and will not be found by the police. We learn later in the movie that the children and Amelia are found, but Amelia is
