Land of the Free, as an American would say, but what about other countries like Europe, China, Africa, Islam, etc… Maybe these other countries definition of “freedom” differs from our own. Europe, in the time from1000 to 1500, had cities with unparalleled freedom compared to any other cities in the world (Reilly, 484). The urban patterns and development throughout these towns in Europe, during the Post-Classical Era, couldn’t compare to the good ol’ cities of Uncle Sam himself. The European cities would come out on top every time for who has more freedom. On the other hand, these cities definitely were not the same. These Western, or European, towns shared their own unique attributes in which helped develop in this era of time. Towns like Cairo, Florence, Hangchou in China, Tenochtitlan, and Jenne-Jeno are just a handful of cities that had great urban development during this era of “unparalleled freedom”, but out of this handful of cities, which of them is considered “the most livable city”.
Uniquely, the most livable city, out of the handful of cities mentioned in paragraph 1, is Florence. Florence is one of the most historical cities in Italy, and most powerful and prosperous cities in Europe to date, but what makes it standout is that it is …show more content…
Florence’s development directly reflected Braudels statement of, “They had outwitted the territorial state… (Reilly, 484).” Florence established its development faster than the territorial state. Florence even established its own currency, mentioned in paragraph 3. All of these unique attributes about Florence helped it prosper and become an even more powerful city. Although Florence seemed unstoppable, the city had its ups and downs throughout its history, but the cause was a showing of real power and ultimately a much stronger city. Florence is an awesome
