Leaders in My Life
The first leader that has influenced my life is my mother. My mother was born and raised in New York. She lived there through high school and after graduating she moved to Norfolk, VA to attend a trade school. Consequently, she met and married my father, had two children, and settled down with her young family. Unfortunately, things did not work out the way she had hoped. Feeling that there was no hope for the marriage, she moved herself and two sons, ages 5 and 2, to be near her parents in Arizona. Many sacrifices are made as a single parent, often leaving little time for a personal life. She dated a few people through the years, but nothing particularly serious initially. The choices that we make about who we spend time with, what career we feel suited for, whether or not to have a family, and many events beyond our control, all influence our purpose. When I married my wife, I felt that life was something to be shared and appreciated with another person. Bringing children into the world changed my purpose in life entirely. I want my children to be decent, selfless people. It is my responsibility to set the example of what it takes to achieve those goals. Education is important to me and something I stress with my children. Time is spent encouraging each of them to envision pursuing a college degree and capitalize on the many benefits to them if they do. Embodying the same values I wish to see in them is paramount. In 2013, I returned to pursue my bachelor’s degree. Completing it at the same time as raising a family and working two jobs is difficult, but this strengthens my message to my children about its importance. Through my actions I am reinforcing the message I have …show more content…
Life is too short to travel through it miserably. The choices I make and my personal conduct should provide me with satisfaction. How I spend my time, the company I keep, and the career I choose all affect my level of happiness. In turn, this is projected outwardly as I travel through life and in my daily interaction with people. Authentic leaders are largely positive, happy people that are able to create environments in which followers also can find fulfillment. I try every day to make work a fun place to be. Near the beginning of each shift at the fire station we devote time to share in one another’s lives. We poke fun at ourselves and make light of stressful situations. Work is a place that we all spend a great amount of our time. It should be a place that we enjoy spending time

According to Avolio, Luthans, and Walumbwa (2004), authentic leaders refers to people who “are deeply aware of how they think and behave and others perceive them as leaders capable of adjusting to their own and others' values/moral perspective, knowledge, and strengths; aware of the context in which they operate; and who are confident, hopeful, optimistic, resilient, and high on moral character” (p. 4). Furthermore, Luthans & Avolio (2003), describe authentic leadership as “root construct that could incorporate charismatic, transformational, integrity and/or ethical leadership” (p.4), however, they argued that these theories were different from each other. In addition, the key to authentic leadership includes Self-awareness, openness, transparency,…

Before introducing the topic, I would like to set the context by sharing an instance which made me somehow conscious of how important it is to be happy and content with one’s job and hence one’s professional life.
