College Admissions Essay: Defining Myself As A Writer

Whenever I am asked to define myself I get caught up between the things that I am and the things I aspire to become. To me it was easy to define myself by the things I am passionate about, I would say a programmer or even a reader but to me those just don’t justify the special and complicated individuality of each and every single one of us. I’ve always been passionate about computer programming but I would rather be described as persistent, dedicated and patient. Because mainly those are the elements I was required to do through the struggle of learning and achieving, or even coming close to achieving what I wanted. It’s part of the beautiful complication of our individuality, which is why I’ll always aspire to become a better version of myself for as long as I can. However, I wasn’t always into programming but at a young age I met a programmer who was at the time making small applications that read any text written in a specific box. Back then I was fascinated by his abilities. He was able to make a program that converts text to speech. After that, I decided to learn from scratch. It was next to impossible task to find tutor where I lived and that pushed me to become a self-taught programmer. It took hard work, long hours of reading, research and effort, and that’s exactly what I want to be; a person with qualities, able to do whatever it takes to reach his goals, not only in programming, but in every other ambition I set my mind to. I still have a lot to learn and …show more content…
Since then, I never forgot his words. They meant a lot to me but in a way, made me a little proud because in the Middle East, a brother’s bond is one of the strongest and most praised connections in our society. Being referred to as a brother, even if it was just that one friend, meant the world to me. I long to be reliable, trusted and supported. Knowing that I have these qualities, ensures that I am becoming a better

When people think of professional actors, they tend to think of romantic leading types. But I wouldn’t trade being a character actor for anything. I studied acting at Carnegie Mellon, and as graduation approached, I noticed that those of us who fell into the ‘character actor’ category were getting different words of wisdom than those who tended to play lead roles. For the leads, there was a lot of pressure to sign with a big agent and start working right away, because it’s all about youth and beauty. But it was almost the opposite for me.…

I have never really been a strong writer. I feel like my writing always gets the point across but if the subject is not something that I know a lot about or am passionate about, then the organization is bad and the content is a lot of fluff and nothing else. My writing is strong in the amount of information I put into it, but lacks nice vocabulary and transition words or phrases. My writing can be very informative like in a research paper, report, or essay. When I know the information I can put it in a paper in a way that the reader can understand it easily.…

Describe Yourself As A Writer I’ve come to realize that after years of writing papers, I’m actually a better writer than I give myself credit for. I’ve noticed over time that I’ve advanced in how I structure my paragraphs, however, not so much with my sentences. It’s like making a cake look delicious at first glance with frosting and decorations, but then you take a bite and there 's way too much sugar or it 's overcooked in the inside. My strength in writing includes: using better words to describe what I’m writing about, spelling complex words, creativity, and passion.…

How I Became a Writer I was a restless child. My parents were astonished at how energetic and chatty their skinny, dark hair girl was. It was made clear to my parents that they needed strategies when it came to putting me to bed, and so they began nightly bedtime stories. Bedtime stories signified the closing of the day. Routinely my father would race me to bed and tightly tuck me in (tightly enough so I couldn’t escape).…

Mediocre, that would be the word I would use to portray myself as a writer. When it comes to writing I battle with myself for hours and hours of what I should jot down on my paper. Receiving a writing assignment gives me heaps of anxiety and depression. Writing comes natural to some people, but for me it’s a big problem that I have yet to overcome. Through the process of writing, I struggle the most in the area of conventions by a landslide.…

Learning is a continuum, yet so is writing because it takes practice. Every time I practiced a sport I saw myself improve; however, with writing I yearned for the moment in which all my arduous work would pay off and that moment never came. Therefore, I faced the brutal, bitter truth, I am an insubstantial writer. Nervous, this word radiated throughout my entire body; this was how I felt about starting the next chapter of my life at college.…

At the end of July, I considered giving up on scholarship writing again. With all the hours I poured into my last essay, it felt like a slap in the face that they didn’t even send a “thank you for trying” letter. I spent the announcement day sitting on my in-law’s porch sipping coffee with Baileys and stewing over yet another essay contest loss. What did the winners do that I did not? Moreover, how do some authors become so famous when I struggled to write a simple essay?…

when writing a paper many things need to go into consideration from the time you get the assignment to printing or submitting the final perfected copy. The first step is the generating ideas and puzzling them together in your first draft. Then you move on to revise, adding information and re-revising the paper you have spent so much time on. Normally then you leave the paper for a couple days with no editing if the writer has not waited until the last second to write the paper. After a few days the writer takes a fresh look at the paper and reworks any parts that still are not flawless.…

As a writer I believe I still have a lot more to learn. In writing I think writing fiction is one of my strengths, for example I do enjoy writing short stories on my free time just for fun. I often share them with one of my friends and my cousin. I am still pretty shy about them, but they seem to really like them. Although, they are not the best stories I can spend a lot of time writing them without getting bored.…

When people pursue writing as a career, often a goal in mind is to have their words reach beyond themselves. Ask one why they write, and it is likely that their response will be as poised as the words that come from their fingertips: to discover, to create, to change the world (as far as people who read go). Their said intentions are almost philanthropic -seeking to serve the public- while their own success seems an unintentional perk. In contrast, my writing habits are comparably selfish, dealing more with personal entertainment and satisfaction than finding and pleasing an audience. Not only has this been a result of my preference for creative writing over academic, but also my tendency to let the speed of my thoughts overtake that of my hand.…
