When an author writes a story, there will always be a central message that the work is made to convey. This message is the theme, and there can be multiple themes in a work. Usually the theme has to be inferred if not directly stated in the text by the author, leading to several different interpretations of theme in one piece of literature. In the novel Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, many themes are conveyed, such as man vs. nature, power of positive thinking, and city vs. nature, that give the book greater meaning.…

When it comes to prosecuting minors for violent crimes, there are twenty-two states, including Kansas, have put in place a “three strikes, you’re out” law for repeat offenders. California is known for having the strictest enforcement of this. No matter what the third strike is, even of the first two were committed when the person was a minor or something small like stealing, they are sentenced to life in prison without parole. For example, say that a defendant steals some videotapes, and they already have two strikes from the past. The defendant could maybe receive 25 years in prison under the three strikes law.…
There are several different types of relics in the Catholic world. The first type is a body part of a saint, like a bone, and instruments of the Passion of Christ. The second type are object s owned or touched by a saint; and the third type are objects that have come in contact with relics, and through the close proximity, have gained holiness. Since relics of God himself are unavailable, the churches utilize the cult of the saints as a way to legitimize their power in the Catholic world.…
The thought of getting shot on campus is a horrific thing that no student wants to think about. That’s the problem with American “intervention” the only answer to ending violence is by adding more violence. Instead of spending billions of dollars in foreign land, why doesn’t the United States use that money to add self-defense programs at public intuitions, instead saying “go buy a gun and if someone tries to shot you, shot back.” Or why not increase school funding’s to ensure that college campuses nationwide have an accurate amount of law enforcement and security. Even if the security guards are unarmed, shooters are less likely to go through with their plans, when a guard is present.…
Artifice In the excerpt “Empire of Illusion” by Chris Hedges argues that “ the most essential skill … is artifice.” After reading the passage, I agree with Chris Hedges because in Political Theater and Consumer culture that is the most popular skill. Artifice is important because people use this skill to confuse others that do not know what is going on. People with this skill cause problem because they are tricking people into believing stuff that is not true.…
I think it is safe to say that if you are alone in the Canadian wilderness in an unknown situation it is no one’s ideal situation. But in the book Hatchet written by Gary Paulsen, that is what happens to 13 year old Brian Robeson when he is going to Canada to visit his dad. But when the plane he is flying in crashes because of the pilots sudden heart attack, He is stranded in the Canadian wilderness where Brian is isolated and stranded and has nothing but his hatchet and himself to try to survive. Even though Brian is stranded he manages to survive after a grueling fifty four days in the wilderness. Unlike Brian I do not think I would be able to survive because of my characteristics and my abilities to see day fifty four.…
