The set in the beginning of the play consisted of a drop covering the entire stage with three arch-shaped “doors” which lifted up to reveal three arches. These three arches served as separate settings for individuals stories which were not connected at this point. The arches showed Cinderella’s house, Jack’s cottage and the Baker’s bakery from stage right to left. In Cinderella’s arch, the walls were smudged, revealing the bad treatment she received from her stepmother and stepsisters. Jack’s house also had smudged walls, but it also had cracks and was lined with used pots and pans, as to show their level of poverty. It also utilized neutral colors, such as beige and brown to add a touch of reality to the play. The drop in the beginning, for example, portrayed a village in neutral and warm colors, but also had hints of dark shading, especially near the woods. This drop with the light drawings and dark accents symbolized how, at a glance, Into the Woods is a light-hearted fairy tale with happy endings, but, in reality, is full of complex and dark turns. When the characters were in the wolves, the colors changed drastically. The set was composed of dark shades of green and other colors to make the black trees stand out. One of the main things used for color was the cyclorama in the background. The cyclorama set the mood for the scene. Normally, it was a dark green or blue-sh color, but the was red during most of the second act. The scenes in the woods further conveyed this through their dark palette of colors. A key part of the color symbolism was the cyclorama. During most of the play, the cyclorama was lit with a dark green/blue/grey, but quickly changed to a red in the last part of Act I, when the Baker’s wife dies, and etc. This red tone represents danger, as seen in the tragic turns that occur during this lighting. The cyclorama also turns purple during the scene with the female giant, linking the characters together through purple and representing their united loyalty to fighting
