Christianity is one of the oldest forms of religion still practiced to this day. Its original purpose was to gain follows of the "son of god" Jesus Christ, who was to show these followers the path to a moral, peaceful life. However as the religion grew people began to obsess with its ideals, and empires began forming around or against it. With Christianity eventually spreading throughout the majority of the ancient eastern world it was no doubt that opposition would follow. Typically …show more content…
Conservative clerics opposed evolution fiercely, while liberal clerics saw no conflict with their beliefs. Before he published the "On the Origin of Species", Darwin was very afraid of the church's reaction, and spent many years collecting evidence as defense to the much expected criticism. It is most likely true that all religions would defend their key doctrines, but since modern science was almost entirely European in origin, it was the reaction of the Christian churches which affected it most. We can also see the effects of the dark ages today in the form of how behind we are in a progressive stance. Since the majority of our culture is derived from areas effected during the dark ages it can be surmised that we are roughly 700 years "behind" in evolutionary progress, both socially and technologically speaking. Imagine how many deaths could have been avoided if such things as penicillin and cell phones had been invented in the 1300s as opposed to the 1900s and 2000s. However had it not been for religious persecution brought on by the Church of England during the 16 and 1700s, America may be a very different place than it is today. Christianity also plays a large role in our art, as much of our precious "ancient" collections are depictions of religious figures, such as "The Last Supper". Architecture has also been heavily effected by Christianity as can be seen in a plethora of college campuses across the country.
Together with its origin and basic conflicts over beliefs and followers, through its spread across Europe, the dark ages and period of inquisition, persecution of non-believers, crusades against the "holy land" and into its much tempered existence in the modern day civilized cultures it can be said that Christianity has played a decisive role in shaping the course of history for better and
