When caring for this culture, it is important for the nurse to honor their beliefs and values. The nurse must communicate care with the patient, as well as the appropriate family member of higher authority. Parents of a sick child may not want other siblings to know about the sickness because it would cause worry for the siblings (Newman Giger, 2013). It is important for the nurse to assess each situation individually and incorporate a plan of care based on these values. A nurse who understands and incorporates the Chinese culture into care will develop positive cooperation from the family (Cheung, Nelson, Advincula, Young Cureton, & Canham, 2014).
In the case study of the Chinese-American woman, she lives alone and has no family support. Family involvement is a big part of the Chinese culture. It would benefit this patient to provide her with home care services to assist her with her peritoneal dialysis and to make sure she adheres to her medications. Because she only has a temporary job and no medical insurance, it would also benefit her to have a consult with a case manager. She may need assistance in paying for her medications and other health care needs. By doing this, it will help the patient be more compliant regarding her health issues at
