In this book, I am only using select sections of chapters to contribute to my research. In the first chapter, there is a section called, “The Division of Labor in Family Maintenance”, here Elder discussed what happens when families economic status was threatened by the father being unemployed it often lead to the children taking on domestic roles in the home. “Children from economically deprived families were an important factor in the household economy” (Elder 29), older children of the family held most of the responsibility that was formerly placed on their parents. These children were forced to grow up and contribute to the family’s economic status. Later in a book Elder discusses a questionnaire that was given to the mothers of the children shortly after the depression ended, it was determined that “two-fifths of children were employed in part- time jobs” (Elder 65) during the depression. My other source does not talk about race so by comparing the two it will show the racism connection. McLoyd is a credible author because she earned her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She is currently a professor at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her research looks at the structure of families and the impact that it has on the child. She was also involved in the editing of many developmental textbooks. The author is credible because she had done research and she is involved in the making of textbooks. Also in this article McLoyd cites Elder in her research which connects the two
