June 9th, 1965 Dr. Strauss.

Charlie called me this morning, he told me he was at the lab at 4 in the morning trying to find a way to stop or slow the deterioration of his intelligence, he said he believes he’s getting closer. I fear that the deterioration of his intelligence will drive him crazy if or when he can find something to slow it down. He keeps working until he’s too tired to go on, or until he passes out, he is emotional and lashes out. He said he’s starting to become dumber and will soon be the old Charlie Gordon, and part of me says he’s right and that he’ll become dumb once again. Charlie told me today during lunch that he’s been doing the math and running tests on Algernon and he said that the now dumb mouse doesn’t have a whole lot of fights still in him. He then said that there should be much deeper and wider Brian fissures and that now he’s just waiting for Algernon to die and for the dissections to show if he was right or not. As Charlie was leaving, it seemed that he was having a hard time remembering things like who he was, where he was, and where he lived. I almost cried when he asked me if I’d walk home with him, I thought for sure he’d forgotten where he lived, but it turned out it was only because he wanted someone to talk to on his way home. When I talk to Charlie, he tells me what the symptoms of the deterioration will look like and then proceeds to tell me that if I happen to see any of these, I need to write it down as soon as I can. He tells me that I also need to tell Dr. Stauss, he says that knowing when it happened, how long it lasted, and how severe it was could help to make the

    These are my thoughts and feelings on pages one through five. I feel sorry for Charlie Gordon because he doesn't understand what's going around him, and what people mean. Such as when he was doing the Rorschach test when they ask him what did he see in the cards. Charlie didn't understand what they meant and said spilled ink.
