Inside the museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, hangs the painting titled “Home Sweet Home”. This oil on canvas was created by the artist Charles Sheeler in 1931. The painting contains a few pieces of furniture. In the center is an empty wooden chair. On the left, you can see two rugs and a staircase that is leading upstairs. On the right, you can see a fireplace and a stove. Near the bottom of the painting you can make out a picnic table, it’s chopped off the painting but enough is there to tell what the object is. The painting also contains light; the source is coming from the lower right side of the painting. The source of light is shown by the shadows from the chair and the staircase. The artist uses the repeating pattern to make the rugs. We did an assignment where we had to make a drawing with one of our thumbnails and a repeating pattern of our choice. Sheeler uses this concept to define the look and feel of his rugs, while I used that to create the water droplet background on my pipe drawing. I wish I found his painting before I did that drawing because my pattern was sloppy and all over the place and I could have learned from Sheeler’s work to keep my pattern tight and compact. The painting also relates to drawing class because in the painting Sheeler uses value to show light and shadows. We had a whole day where we did value studies to show how to draw shadows and incorporate light into our drawing. I enjoyed how Sheeler used light in his painting, especially that shadow that the light source gave the chair. It was very eye-catching. That was very well lined up and you can tell what direction the light was coming from and what it is coming out of. In my future drawings, from studying this painting, I am going to use more value because it will make my drawing more eye-catching. I enjoyed the trip to the DIA and viewing Sheeler’s work will definitely have an impact on my
