A Mobile Beginning
Cell phones have evolved throughout the years from the inventions of newer models. Starting from the beginning of its development, the first wireless mobile phone was introduced by “the American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T) after World War II. To service an area, there was only one radio service tower (2015, Driscoll Walter). It was very limiting concerning the low reception and the short amount of users of twenty or less per district. Police departments were the main users because these phones costed thousands of dollars (2015, Driscoll Walter). Back in the day, people were still not familiar with these new innovative inventions. This changed later in 1985, Motorola and AT&T had more than 340,000 cell phone subscribers with wireless service. Forwarding to 1992, the United States had already millions of cell phone users. Worldwide, cellphones increased tremendously again to one billion in 2006 (2015, Driscoll Walter). With a cell phone, people are amazed with what it can do. Using apps, you can make calls, send text messages, send emails, participate in social media, take pictures, print, fax, listen to music, watch videos, play games, GPS, pay online and much more. (Watts 2012) Again in 2013, owning a cell phone has continued to expand to 6.8 billion (Kuntsche, E., & Labhart, F., 2014). This number almost reaches the world’s total population of slightly higher than 7 billion in 2013 (Pison, G., 2013). Thus, owning a cell phone has become mainstream and is still widely expanding. Negative effects of constant use of cellphones includes violence, sleeplessness, smoking, suicide and low-self-esteem (Yang & et al, 2010). This shows that too much of a good thing is bad. Consequently, cell phones are not being well controlled and becomes a problem. Just like a drug, cellphones are in constant demand and humans became hopeless without it. There has been a study where students were asked to give their phones and electronic devices away for 24 hours (Brian, 2013). It has shown shocking results on these students change of emotions, in their bodies that relate to addiction. For example, common signs were their assumptions of their phone vibrating or ringing even if they did not have it with them. They had the constant need to check their phone to see who called or messaged them. Emotionally, they felt anxious, lonely and worried while they were fidgeting and could not stay calm (Brian, 2013). People with intellectual disabilities are known for having limitations on reading texts, numbers and visual features. In the past, people with deficits were very limited, but cell phones have brought them new hope. These people with disabilities do not use cell phones the same way as the general population does. What matters to them is being protected rather than text messaging friends out of convenience and pleasure. To amplify accessibility for these people, smart phone technology is progressively improving (Stock, S., Davies, D., Wehmeyer, M., & Palmer, S.,
