Summary: In this case, Roe, a single pregnant woman challenged the constitutionality of the abortion laws in Texas prohibiting all abortions.
Constitutional issue: Do abortion laws that criminalize abortions, except those required to save the life of the mother, violate the Constitution?
Outcome & effect: After Roe lost the case, it was sent from the court of appeals to the Supreme Court. The court decided that the decision will be left up to the pregnant woman’s doctor. The decision gave a woman total decision over the pregnancy during the first trimester and declared different levels of state interest for the second and third trimesters. The abortion laws of 46 states were affected by the Court's ruling.
