Becoming a pilot is my long-time dream.
As a young boy, I have always been curious about the mechanics of appliances. I often break the parts up — challenging me to know the ins and outs. The best part of it is putting it back together or solving the faults giving me a great sense of achievement. My secondary school was near the Kai Tak airport where I watched take-off and landings and listened to the roaring of the jets every day. This continued to grow my passion for flying.

Reading books and researching online have also equipped me with the knowledge that is required for the position. Moreover, I have made quite a number of friends who work in the cockpit and shared with me knowledge about flight operation such as Airbus fly by wire, Boeing 777 real-time feedback on controls, China and Russia which use the metric system in measuring altitude in communications between the air traffic control and the cockpit. Through these interactions and my work experiences, I learn more about how cockpit crew carry out their duties.
After all these years working in the cabin, Cathay Pacific truly deserves to the number one airline in the world. All the trainings and measurements taken to uphold this reputation armed me with a high awareness of safety and security standards, effective communication skills to disseminate information and great teamwork in ensuring every flight is smooth and safe. I believe team spirit, self-discipline, calmness and situational awareness are necessary attributes a pilot of a successful airline should have.
Flying a plane is not a one-man show. It requires teamwork, the coordination and cooperation between cockpit crew and the air traffic control and between cockpit crew and cabin crew. With my experience as cabin crew, I frequently have to conduct excellent communication skills in giving and receiving instructions to ensure information is clearly conveyed.
A pilot is accountable not only to himself, the company, but also hundreds of other passengers. Therefore, one needs a high level of self-discipline to ensure one is more than fit enough to carry out one’s duties.
