Keith (2009) discussed the three basic principles of servant leadership which is to go to work to help others, listen to coworkers and patrons to recognize and meet their requests, and cultivate associates. Following the principles can reduce stress, enable contentment and a drive that would invigorate you and your colleagues (Keith, 2009). Servant leadership has been theoretically connected to numerous optimistic characteristics and is seen as the imperative composition of countless organizations Sendjaya and Pekerti (2010). Furthermore, Northhouse (2013) described servant leaders as individuals that attend to the needs of followers, the organization, the public and citizens at large.

1. What type of servant leader behaviors did Herb Kelleher exhibit in starting the airline? Based on Northhouse (2013) behavior descriptions, I would state Herb Kelleher displayed the following behaviors: conceptualizing in which he understood the organization mission and intricacies which created value for Southwest. Herb helped Colleen to grow and succeed, which allowed Colleen to achieve her goals.

With the outcomes, followers at Southwest are able to grow and have a societal impact on the customers they serve. For example, Colleen who was a poor girl from rural Vermont started as Herb’s secretary, became vice president of administration, then executive vice president of customers, and then president and chief operating officer (Northhouse, 2013).
