Since the 1990s the Somali pirates have been terrorizing cargo ships, cruise ships and many other types of transportation (2014 M. Phlanz). One of the reasons the Somali Pirates first started robbing and seizing ships and holding people for ransom is that there is a lack of consequence for example, Abduwali Muse, the leader in the captain Phillips kidnapping was only put in prison in the United States for only 33 years and 9 months (2014, travelthruhistory.com) which he is only 27 so by the time he is released from prison he will only be 60 and will most likely still be alive. Abduwali Muse hijacked a ship and took a man for ransom and he is only in a federal prison for only 33 years. But the Somali pirates have committed many more crimes other then the taking and holding Captain Phillips and the attack on the cruise liner where nobody was injured or killed. But why would they do these crimes?, most pirates are in it for the money and the cargo they get but also the ransom people give them (2008, D. Engber). Most Pirates way back in the 1700s and 1800s were the Pirates you typically saw with hook Hands, big wooden ships and eyepatches, but today all of the Somali pirates and other pirates in other country's use little speed boats with all sorts of weapons on their ship like guns, grenades and rocket propelled grenades (RPG) and to get on the ships they get …show more content…
But on the next day which was April 10th Abduwali Muse got a small group of men to go back and take the boat, and it was a success the Somali pirates were able to board the boat. But the ships crew did the same thing they did before, they turned on the bulge pump and made a fake call, which did not work. The crew were ordered to hide while Capitan Phillips tried to fend them off without getting shot. The Somali pirates were able to break into the bridge and take Capitan Phillips, but all the Somali pirates wanted to know where the engine room was they they could shut off the power throughout the ship but there is some stories where a crew member broke a glass bottle on the ground and then the Somali pirates stepped on the glass and injured them and this story would come into play later but there are some people that say that the story of the broken glass is false. But otherwise the Somali pirates were able to get onto a lifeboat and go out to sea on it with Capitan Phillips inside. They drove the lifeboat with a gun to his head the whole time, threatening his life. But Captain Phillips was scared but he tried to do many courageous acts of trying to escape by causing a distraction inside the lifeboat but also Captain
