The Help Questions
The main character of my book was Aibileen Clark, a black maid working for a white family in 1960s Jackson, Mississippi, and she was a dynamic character. Throughout the story, Aibileen was trying to get over the recent passing of her son, Treelore, and she was wary of her boss, Elizabeth, and the other white women in Jackson. The treatment of the help is poor, and they do not have a say in the community. This all changes when Skeeter, a recent college graduate, comes to Aibileen to ask her to help write a book on the black help in Jackson. Aibileen is unsure at first but gradually agrees, and eventually changes her opinion about the world because of the hope of making a change in the lives of African Americans working for white families. The catalyst for her change was Skeeter treating her like an equal and not caring about the color of her skin or that she was a maid. In the book, Aibileen and Minny help Skeeter to write a book exposing the way southern household maids are treated in hopes that their children’s future will be brighter as far as race relations. By Aibileen and Minny telling their story, hundreds of lives were affected by exposing the truth, and some white women were showed what they were doing and tried to change their ways. Skeeter also changed the black women’s perceptions on the way some white women were, and, therefore, they tried to change the preconceived notions about them. By writing the book, the women made everyone who read the book aware of the hardships the maids faced every day from low pay to being forced to use an outside bathroom separate from the main house. This changed the way people thought about southern households and pushed them into trying to change the way people thought about different
