Looking back at some of my experiences with leaders and mentors, I would notice that some would seem successful and be ineffective due to their credibility. Chapter one talks about modeling the way and leading by example. When I am ever being coached or mentored, I have to assume that whatever they are teaching me is creditable information. They need to lead by example in order to remain creditable. In the Marine Corps, there were many individuals who were in leadership positions who talked a big game, however when it came down to a difficult scenario they were very ineffective.…

During this internship, I focused on three large projects. First, I analyzed a mixed-methods survey sent out to mentors and mentees to locate areas that the mentorship program could be improved. The most prominent theme that emerged from the data was that the mentors did not understand that mentorship has a life-cycle, and often times the first stage of the mentorship relationship is the most difficult. Mentors would give up on mentees because they could not get past the rough stage of building the relationship with their mentee. With this data, I crafted hand-outs and activities related to the mentorship life-cycle that were used during mentor training.…

These reasons include the lack of women in leadership positions to serve as mentors, the hesitation of a male leader to mentor a female protégé, and the differences in the way mentoring is accomplished for women versus men. The lack of the presence of a successful female leader to emulate and receive mentoring from impedes the path of those who choose to peruse a leadership role.
