What would you do if you lost a limb? Would you dare to surf on the open ocean on the wild waves with the chance to lose your surfboard and be stranded all alone in the ocean without a limb? Bethany Hamilton had immense courage as a thirteen year old girl who lost her arm to a shark while surfing and not long after losing her arm heroically returned to surfing.
Bethany Hamilton was born in Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii on February 8, 1990. She is the daughter of Tom and Cheri Hamilton. She also has two older brothers. Noah is eight years older than her and Timothy is four years older than her. At a young age Bethany was apart of the Hanalei Surf Co. Team. Bethany’s parents taught her to surf at age two. Bethany exhibited great talent and potential at a young age and was homeschooled so she could focus on her surfing career. Bethany travels around the world teaching others to surf, participating in competition, and revealing her story. Since the attack, her inspiring story has been told in a New York Times best selling autobiography. A film was created in 2011 called Soul Surfer, which depicted Bethany's life. Bethany built her own foundation called Friends of Bethany. Friends of Bethany reaches out to fellow amputees and youth. Along with traveling and other charitable events, Bethany now has her own family. Bethany married Adam Dirks in 2013. Together they have a adorable son named Tobias. A healthy lifestyle is extremely important to Bethany. Bethany wrote a book called Body and Soul. Body and Soul encourages healthy eating and an all out healthy lifestyle. Bethany’s newest and biggest project is a film called Surfs Like a Girl. The film will portray Bethany as one of the greatest surfers in the
