While there was a case of smallpox on the ship, many believed the disappearance was because of the Bermuda Triangle. The captain could have gotten the disease and then a storm caused the ship to sink. The Ellen Austin incident did not leave evidence when the ship went down. Consequently, some people have gone to some extreme measures and made up some inane stories to prove what happened. The most popular theory was that aliens had abducted the crew and left the ship unmanned and just waiting to sink. While this does seem far fetched, there was nothing to say otherwise so the theory gained some belief.
Flight 19, the most popular disappearance in all of the Bermuda Triangle's history, has a mysterious disappearance also. Flight 19 was a training exercise when things became out of control. The Pilot of the plain had radioed in to tell his compass was malfunctioning and he was not where they thought he was. He eventually ran out of gas and went down in an unknown location.
