Barriers In America

Lucio Pozzi used his performance art, Patchameena, to articulate language barriers, and also let audiences to be personally on the scene and feel the barrier. Lucio Pozzi was also not born in America, but Milan, Italy, and he immigrated to the United States in 1962 as a guest of Kissinger’s Harvard International Summer Seminar. Patchameena was performed in th CR10 Contemporary Arts Center, where Lucio gave a speech using nonsensial gibberish and fake languages, attached with abundant body languages, gestures, emotional changes, as well as expressions. Also, sometimes different kinds of sounds were played when he stopped saying anything. Foe stood for a video footage of lessons that he received from an acting coach employed to teach him to speak English in the accent of his cultural background. The text read by him was taken from a book with the same title as his piece, Foe. The Book, Foe, was written by J. M. Coetzee, which is a sequel to Robinson Cruseo. “In this book, Friday (the savage) has been multilated; his tongue has been removed and he cannot speak.” Fernandes was trying to memorize the specific story where Cruose expained this to others. In the video, he read some of the sentences several times with a different accent from his, and the coach’s voices were heard to instruct and train him how to pronounce correctly. The expression and his movement of his mouth when speakng in other accent was shown in the video, which indicated the hardship of immitating other accent. One scene showed that he used his fingers to stretch and pull his mouth to make it work and speak better. If compared with the original accents of speaking, Fernandes is now talking in a very different way and voice. Sometimes, language barriers would happen because of different accents, because it could be very hard to understand things told in a distinct and unfamiliar accent Ferforming Foe was a sequel to Foe, where he continued to discover the relationship between accent and speaking.
