“Yes we can.” It is the one phrase which propelled Barack Obama to the helm of being the first African-American president of America. Racism has been a serious problem in America since time immemorial. However, the election of Barack Obama as president brought hope to a country which cherishes values such as liberty and justice for all. Obama’s rise to presidency led to a revolution which seemed to be of black against white. The path to the United States’ presidency started in 2008, through an electrifying speech of hope when “Obama incorporated an honest discussion of race within the story of seeking to perfect the union” (Rowland 145). Through his win, Obama became the first politician to be named the Advertising Age’s marketer of the year. It is thus prudent to analyze what made Obama’s advertising unique besides investigating how he revolutionized campaign marketing through the use of new media. It is without a doubt that politics is about marketing hence, “Presidential candidates in particular must distinguish themselves from the competition by strategically branding themselves and their campaign platform.” (Michaelsen 6). One key aspect of political marketing is the ability to inform and persuade voters. Obama, unlike the past candidates, used social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter to reach out to voters, hence making him have high approval ratings. In addition, Obama ignited the significance of emotions in political marketing by having an emotional appeal for change, which seemed to be the opposite of his opponent who seemed unpopular at the time. It is without a doubt “politics comes down to our gut reactions about politicians and their ideas.” (Michaelsen 17). Barack Obama’s victory revolutionized the political marketing in America and the entire world. It began in 2009 when Obama issued a memo instructing agencies to consider giving benefits to federal employees’ same-sex spouses. The directive led to Social Administration to lower the number of requirements for changing the sex of an individual in government documents. It was a revolution that would determine how an individual’s gender would be recorded on official documents such as passports. Before Obama, if one had to undergo sex-reassignment surgery in order to change their gender on an official document. Through Obama, it became possible for people to change their gender on social cards with just a note from a medical practitioner. It was a revolution from the past administrations which were characterized by rigid federal governments. President Obama and his administration rallied behind LGBTQ community, especially the transgender, by ensuring that all Americans enjoyed rights as enshrined in the constitution.
