This generation lived through tragedies during the Great Depression from 1929-1939, lived through World War I, and fought and survived World War II, only some of the reasons for the given “greatest” nickname. However, they also turned a blind eye to many issues in society at the time, such as racial and sexual discrimination (Stanhope).
The Silent Generation The SIlent Generation consists of approximately 28.4 million Americans, according to the previously mentioned article by CNN. This generation bore witness to many pivotal moments in history, such as participating in the Civil Rights movements and the many that mourned the death of former president John F. Kennedy. They were alive for immensely important moments in sports history, as the world watched 22 year old Muhammed Ali became the boxing heavy weight champion in 1964, beating Sonny Liston for the title.
