They initially sought to gather data from the National Highway Institute to analyze street and highway driving. However, due to many factors playing a role in road accidents such as incompliance, weather, and enforcement, the data was simply inconsistent. When they turned to NASCAR, they were able to eliminate many factors that yielded inconsistent results. They were able to conclude racecar drivers do in-fact take greater risks on the race track as their cars and environments become safer. However, total injuries and deaths have fallen because the safety advancements significantly outweigh any changes the drivers make to their racing style.
