“Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit’ em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a Mockingbird” (119). Atticus says it’s wrong for anyone to kill a mockingbird because they don’t do anything for anyone but sing. This could be compared to killing anyone defenseless or vulnerable, just like accusing Tom Robinson of rape. “I think maybe he put his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things” (130). Atticus realized he had power over most living things when he held the gun. He thought it was an unfair advantage so he stopped using a gun as a weapon altogether. “You never really understand a person until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (39). Atticus always tries to be understanding of a person’s situation. He tries to look from other people’s perspective. It is known that Atticus is an honorable man, helping others before himself. He is a strong believer in the Golden Rule. Why wouldn’t it make sense for Atticus to help out a fellow individual? Atticus Finch has repeatedly shown compassion and kindness throughout the book. He values honesty and equality for everyone no matter a person’s skin color. Race, gender, etc., doesn’t matter we're all still people and we should respect each other as such.
