Attention Getter: In the United States more than 50% of all pregnancies are not planned and 60 out of every 1,000 pregnancies are females between the ages of 15-19. (Pre-Teen and Teenage Pregnancy, Moir, and Leishman)
Relevance Statement: In 2009, 400,000 teenagers gave birth in the United States. On average taxpayers pay around $4,080 annually per teenage mother, and considering the debt our state is in right now it is important to educate young students on sex ed, not only for the health of young girls but also for the financial stability of everybody else.( Everyone Deserves a Second Chance, Hudgins, Erikson, and Walker)

First, what society feels is causing adolescent sexual activity
Although society leads us to believe that males are always the first to take action in sexual activity, according to James Moir and June Leishman’s book Pre- teen and Teenage Pregnancy: A Twenty-First Century Reality, girls generally show sexual attraction earlier than boys. An adolescent's view on the social and personal aspects on sexual anxiety depend on what relationships they have been exposed to. The family’s values, the family’s principles, and the relationship with the family are all factors that can play a big role in the anxiety

When considering whether to keep the baby or not the mother must consider the relationship with the father of the baby, the family’s opinion, personal values, and views on adoption. Teenagers who get an abortion are generally ones who are no longer with the baby’s father or aren’t financially stable. ( Termination, Parenting, or Adoption , Yuen and Lam)
Research shows that teenage mothers generally don’t choose to put their baby up for adoption because of the emotional attachment but girls who do choose adoption for their baby are ones who come from an advantageous environment, wants to attend college, or has a positive outlook on adoption. If the pregnancy is intentional or not, the mother will more than likely not be prepared for the emotional and physical changes her body is about to go through. Whereas older women can grasp the idea of them carrying a living, growing human being inside of them and can find comfort, young mothers don’t always have the maturity to understand that and it is terrifying to them.
