Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood-onset psychiatric conditions, occurring in 5% of children. ADHD can persist into adulthood affecting behaviour and development. ADHD is extensively studied and ADHD literature is plentiful, however, ADHD pathophysiology is still not completely known. The lack of a direct cause and mechanism of disease complicates treatment for many individuals. Finding an ideal treatment is often the result of a “trial and error” process.…
b) Extract of email from the nurse practitioner Ms. Jones prefers: Gerald W. Hall, Robins AFB, demonstrates the level of care provided through the military health system. I have requested and even offered to pay for a MD or a qualified specialist to see my daughter, but the Court and my ex-wife have refused to even consider a second opinion. “I have 1200 children I give care for, on average 30/day.” The nurse in spite of his incredible workload, and in accordance with the mother's desire, was able to quickly diagnose and prescribe ADHD medication to my youngest daughter with “ADHD”.…
When running into someone for the first time, people often inquire “who are you?” On the surface this question appears simple enough; you give your name, maybe a fact about why you are there, and the question seems to be satisfied. However, if you turn that question inward and ask “who am I?” you discover that what appeared to be a shallow puddle of a question is actually a great well of complexity. When asking the questions “who am I?”…
In this case study we follow Liam, a five-year-old boy from England through the BBC documentary “Living with ADHD”. Liam displays most of the symptoms of ADHD, specifically the hyperactive-impulsivity dimension of the disorder. By the end of the documentary we learn that Liam has mild ADHD and ODD. When analyzing Liam’s behavior through the cognitive-behavioral theory I will be accessing Liam’s cognitive and behavior during a specific event that is in the documentary. While accessing that specific event I will be identifying what triggers Liam to act a certain way, what the maladaptive schema, the automatic response Liam has, how Liam copes and Liam’s self regulation.…
How does technology change us, and is it bad In today’s modern society technology has become an important part of many people’s daily lives and unplugging is difficult. The problems that come with the oversaturation of technology and information have started to become apparent within today’s society. Humans are addicts for anything that seems good not knowing when to quit or how to self-moderate.…
He has always got to be in control of every situation. He goes in and out of his room/building at least 30 times a day. I believe he has adapted his behaviour to this so he can be confined like he previously was. If James wasn’t brought up in an environment like this I believe his outcome…
Both articles by Milch and his colleagues , and Barkley were very informative on defining ADHD and the subtypes of the disorder and also explaining where research about the disorder has its strengths and where more research needs to be done. Both articles indirectly discussed issues for families and children and discussed things that should be considered for the next DSM. ADHD has been associated with key symptoms such as poor sustained attention, impulsiveness and hyperactivity (Barkley 1997). ADHD was first introduced to the DSM in 1980 where the first concerns arose about whether or not ADHD was a separate diagnosis from Conduct disorder.…
Attention-Deficit Disorder Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) /Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (American Psychiatric Association, 1994), affects 3 to 5% of school age children. However, some studies suggest the percentage of students who are affected by ADD/ADHD is upwards of 8% of all school-aged children.…
Many people in the world are affected by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD. ADHD is a genetic disorder, that can be passed to other family member’s. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a “brain disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with the functioning or development (NIH, 2016)”. Many parents and teachers have the children diagnosed because of certain things like inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. When it comes to inattention, children and adults tend to wander off task.…
Let’s face it. The current treatment for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is far from ideal. When medications for ADHD became available, parents were happy that their adolescents would finally be able to live a normal, social life. Although the treatments for ADHD help some adolescents, they can also be problematic. Adolescents with ADD/ADHD should not have to take medication for it.…
ADHD formally was recognized as a disorder by the medical community and included in the DSM II in 1968 under the title hyperkinetic reaction of childhood. This then expanded to include criteria for adults in the DSM 5 of 2013. However before the inclusion in the DSM II there were several examples of attention problems by early physicians and philosophers. The earliest reference to attention was made by William Shakespeare.…
Synopsis of Article One of the most common childhood behavior disorders is Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Students who have ADHD typically struggle from the inability to pay attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. These three symptoms are typically seen by a teacher in the classroom on a daily basis. Section 504 of the Vocational and Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1997 have created expectations for using classroom interventions in order to help the behavior of students with ADHD. There are many different behavioral intervention strategies suggested throughout the article.…
In "Attention Deficit: the Brain Syndrome of Our Era" Richard Restak examines the brain 's ability to multitask and the consequences of multitasking. Restak states that our brains respond to all the technology around us such as television, movies, cell phones, e-mail, and the Internet. He claims that our brains are changing its organization and functions because of the modern world such as technology. The changes of the brain can be considered as both good and bad, but considering the future, I think the changes of the brain would not be for the better.…
ADHD can be a difficult disorder to live with for people who have this diagnosis, this can even impact the people who interact with these individuals every day. Families can have the largest impact and it can affect their way of life in many different ways especially in young children and adolescent’s school settings. “Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with poor grades, poor reading and math standardized test scores, and increased grade retention. ADHD is also associated with increased use of school-based services, increased rates of detention and expulsion, and ultimately with relatively low rates of high school graduation and postsecondary education,” says the Academic and Educational Outcomes of Children with…
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder In the 1990 's the disorders, Attention-Deficit Disorder, which shortened is A.D.D., and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, also known as A.D.H.D., was officially combined into one disorder which is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, which is also known as A.D/ H.D. Although many people today still call the disorder A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder mainly affects children and teens. It affects 3-5% of the children in school, although it is not unheard of an adult having A.D./H.D.…
