By the 1940's, battleships were no longer the most important naval vessel, aircraft carriers were and as it happened all of the Pacific Fleet’s carriers were away from the base on December 7. Some had returned to the mainland and others were delivering planes to troops on Midway Islands. As a result the U.S was able to bounce back relatively quick.
In my World History book in chapter twenty-nine, section two there's a short part over the attack on Pearl Harbor. “Japan Attacks the United States”. When world war two began in 1939, the United States declared to be on good terms. But, many americans felt sympathy for those who battled the “Axis Powers.” President of the united states at the time (FDR) was of course one who felt sympathy. FDR tried to provide warships and other aid to Britain as it stood alone against Hitler.
Then, that causes American involvement to grow! When war broke out in Europe in 1939 the Japanese saw a chance to grab European possessions in Southeast Asia. The rich materials which were oil, rubber, and tin would be for fighting its war against the Chinese. To stop Japanese aggression the United States banned the sale of war materials, such as iron, steel, and oil to Japan. Japs leaders then saw this move as an attempt to interfere in Japan’s plan. December seventh, 1941. Japanese airplanes bombed the American Fleet at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Then, president FDR the next day asked congress to declare war on Japan. On December 11, Germany and Italy, Japan’s allies declared war on the United States.
In the long run the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor would be a serious mistake as Hitler’s invasion of the soviet union. But, in the months after the Pearl Harbor attack possessions in the pacific fell to the Japs one by one.
The Pearl Harbor attack is a topic that is still talked about in history classes all over the United States to this very day. Not only is it talked about in history classes but there's even movies out about the attack it was so devastating.The attack was the day that the United States had entered world war two. In Hawaii there's a place out on the ocean that people can visit to see the USS Arizona ship under the water. In Washington D.C there is even a memorial for it.
