Attachment Issues In Jealousy Research

Jealousy is a network of emotions that encompasses copious amounts of feelings that can be viewed as emotional reactions or behaviors. When people display signs of jealousy, they begin to feel or display envy of another or their achievements and advantages. Also, when people display signs of jealousy, usually it is because they would like to have what another possesses. Moreover, research demonstrates that jealousy can be derived from many different aspects. Research has demonstrated that jealousy can come from areas such as anxiety, avoidance, or low self-esteem, but the most frequently seen aspect is from attachment issues. Also, Costa states that “jealousy is a major source of relationship dissatisfaction, manifesting as conflicts, separations, aggression, and violence, all of which are aimed at shaping the responses and limiting the autonomy of the partner” (Costa 2015). This demonstrates that jealousy in relationships is nothing more than unnecessarily fostered thoughts that have been exaggerated to the point where it becomes detrimental to the relationship. Moreover, research demonstrates that jealousy may be found in more than just the human species. According to Burchell, “in mammals, the two key motivational systems that govern the production and survival of offspring are the attachment and sexual motivation systems” (Burchell 2011). Also, she states that when it comes to mammals, “emotional and sexual threats trigger specific forms of jealousy, in order to protect the primary relationship” (Burchell 2011). According to Rodriguez, “trust is essential to the development of healthy, secure, and satisfying relationships” (Rodriguez 2015). Also, she states that jealousy will come about the relationship when “experiencing lower levels of trust” (Rodriguez 2015). This suggests that once a partner develops distrust in the other, jealousy is more likely to develop. The envious partner has convinced themselves that his or her partner will most likely be infidel and leave the relation. He or she does not have strong confidence in the other partner’s faithfulness, so he or she becomes jealous, thinking that his or her partner will leave when given the opportunity. For this reason, jealous individuals end up destroy the relationship themselves because when they begin to display jealous behaviors such as snooping through the other partners belonging, the individuals tend to push away his or her partner, ultimately ending the relationship.
