Nick Parisi, intern at student disability services, spoke in the Marcus White living room about the benefits of assistive technology in the classroom. Assistive technology is defined as any technology that can be used to improve the functionality of students with disabilities. The purpose of these aids is to level the academic playing field and allow each student to have an equal chance. However, the use of these aids comes with many misconceptions. Parents and teachers alike say these students are receiving an unfair advantage by being able to record lectures and by uploading notes online. Parisi spoke on behalf of those who require assistance by stating that “the goal is to teach students, give them access and tools and then allow them to use it until one day they may no longer need it.” Disabilities that require this …show more content…
“He is the most unorganized mess I’ve ever met, and I usually can’t help him because I can’t read his chicken scratch,” said Akers. By using the pen her son is able to take notes like every other student in class, which allows him to receive help without being embarrassed. From there, those notes can later be uploaded to a word document where she is able to help him organize the notes in a way that is most effective for him to understand. Any holes in his note taking can be filled in from the audio recorded notes also on the pen that can be replayed as many times as needed. “My friends think it’s pretty cool that I can go back and hear the notes again, but they don’t get how long it takes for me to do it, it’s like I’m sitting in class all over again,” said Hunter Akers. He went on to explain that tools like the Live Scribe also make it easier on his teachers because they don’t have to stop class as frequently and check in on him to ensure he is caught up on
