Communications 111—Fall Final
Question 1: Context is the circumstances surrounding a situation, which is why it is so important to communication. Context can drastically change communication, as it affects how people interpret each others words, as well as the messages behind it.
One way that context can change communication is through context rich communication. Context rich communication is the richest context that one can get, as it is face-to-face communication. Therefore, one can interpret what one actually means based on the use of facial expressions, hand gestures, tone, and other features. For example, if two friends are talking to each other in person, …show more content…
For example, in low context cultures people rely on verbal code, and the communicator is rather explicit. In low context cultures, the value of a single word is less important. Therefore, if someone wants to say no, they simply say the word “no”. This is how most people communicate in North America and Western Europe. On the other hand, in high context cultures the communicator may not have to say anything, as silence is understood by members of the culture. They let their culture explain for themselves. Therefore, they have a way to say no, without actually saying the word “no”. This is how most people in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and South America communicate. Therefore, if someone coming from a low context culture interacts with someone coming from a high context culture, they may have misunderstandings or feel that someone is coming off as cold towards them.

For example, The Walt Disney Company is a huge conglomerate as they now own ABC, ESPN, Hulu, Pixar, Lucasfilm, Marvel, as well as Disney Animation Movies, Radio Disney, Disney Channel, and many other assets. Disney has bought out all of these companies, and therefore owns all of the media belonging to them, which comes along with a great amount of power. For example, if someone chooses to follow a series on ABC, they are not only supporting ABC, but Disney as well. Some other notable conglomerates are Comcast, Time Warner, and NewsCorp. Economic convergence is important because it makes it more convenient to maintain companies when they are all under mass media companies, rather than several individual ones that may disappoint their consumers as they may not have enough money to carry out their
