In 1913, Henry Ford installs the first moving assembly line for mass production of an entire automobile. His concept reduced the time it took to build a vehicle from more than 12 hours to …show more content…
In 2002, in Alabama Hyundai Motor Company built a manufacturing plant which consisted of 3000 plus employees. It manufactured cars at a frequency of 1000 cars per day. Hyundai claimed that its manufacturing plant was valued at 1.1 billion dollars. It further invested 173 million dollars to enhance the efficiency of assembly engines. As of now it has more than 3 lakh employees working under them. In 1986, Toyota established its automobile manufacturing plant in Georgetown, Kentucky, USA. This plant is the biggest plant of Toyota outside Japan. It actively began production in May 1988. It presently manufactures Avalon sedan, Camry sedan, and Venza crossover. The factory also harvests 4 cylinder and V6 engines and powertrain parts with the annual volume of 500,000 vehicles and 600,000 engines. The most important part of the assembly line was related to labor. Henry Ford invested millions in machines that mechanized most of the work in the assembly line. In what was considered as the revolutionary process, worker hated it. Their work was restricted. It became boring and monotonous. It was very difficult to keep the workers when they started the concept of moving assembly line. The highly skilled workers were replaced by unskilled workers who had to do the same work periodically. Work became degraded. It didn’t require the worker to think. They just had to keep pace with the machines. Workers folded under the …show more content…
For example, Gunnison homes made custom houses on a moving assembly line. These houses had all facilities with perfect wall structure and dimensions. But the Americans didn’t want to restrict their taste of their houses on a company, so Foster Gunnison eventually had to scrap his idea of homes made on assembly line. The electronic appliances also got manufactured in the line production. Ford’s assembly line was made importantly designed to build model T. Model T was one of the most profitable car in the 20th century. But the problem with model T was that it came only in one color i.e. black. People wanted variety. So General Motors took the initiative of giving variety to customers. General Motors realized that it was impossible to compete with Ford in the prices of the vehicle. So the key was to making cars which costs a little above Ford but giving a variety of colors to choose. By 1926, Ford had lost 25% of the market share to General Motors. As a consequence, Ford had to abandon the reliable model T. Ford company then introduces a new model known as model A. This was a revolutionary transition in the assembly line of Ford. Henry Ford had to retool his assembly line to manufacture 5580 parts of model A. Indeed it was a colossal change from model T to model A. From making model T for 19 years, model A required a massive retooling. It costed Henry Ford a quarter of a billion in retooling. In 1941, during
