Melvin is a misanthrope with an obsessive compulsive disorder. He alienates almost everyone he interacts with. Melvin is also superstitious and he has a pathological fear of germs. At the restaurant where Melvin has his breakfast every day, there is only one waitress who can tolerate his behavior and her name is Carol Connelly. Connelly’s suffers from chronic asthma and this could be the only reason she tolerates Melvin’s behavior because she needs the money to cater for her son’s medical expenses.
