Historical Context
Apollo 13 was to be the third lunar landing attempt, but because of the explosion in the service module oxygen tank, they had to take risks and make up new safe ways to get them home. Because they had shut it down, there was no heat. They were cold, uncomfortable, wet, dehydrated, and hungry. (history.nasa.gov) They ate frozen packages of food. The crew encountered cold and had no comfort after the explosion. Their mission became a serious and scary event. Americans watched, waited and prayed, for the crew to get home. (aviationweek.com) It was an important event for nasa because they had a chance to prove themselves. To prove that they could handle the situation. The crew spent three days in space cold and scared while the control panel did all they could.
