My Three Favorite Texts
(An Analysis of my Three Favorite Texts This Semester)

Throughout the first semester, we have studied many texts in room 303. These texts include things anywhere from plays, to other forms of literature. I really enjoyed reading about the characters and what they did. I also enjoyed receiving the messages from each story. Some were personal, and some were very good life lessons. Three texts that I enjoyed would be Valediction Forbidding Mourning, Elegy, and Beowulf.
One of my favorite texts from this semester would have to be Valediction Forbidding Mourning. This poem is definitely one of my favorites from this class. It is my favorite for many reasons. One reason I enjoyed this poem is because it conveyed many emotions.

This is one of my favorite texts for many reasons. One reason being that it teaches some really good life lessons. Modesty and the importance of poor people are two messages that are conveyed in this piece of text. I really like the fact that modesty is mentioned in this text. However, my favorite part is how he feels about the poor. He believed that being rich doesn’t make you better than the poor. One way he supports his idea is the concept of their graves. He said even though the rich tend to be buried in bigger graves, he likes the simplicity of the smaller graves that the poor have. In the text he says, “the short and simple annals of the poor.” What he means by this is he thinks that poor people die long before they get to leave their mark on the world. I agree with many of his views and that is why I enjoyed this text so …show more content…
One reason I liked this story so much was because of how good of a person Beowulf was. I liked how motivated he was and how he was willing to do so much for his people. One of the major motivations he had was his duty to his people. In the beginning of the story, Beowulf steps up to fight Grendel. He does this because he knows he is capable of defeating the monster. Because he knows he is capable, he feels obligated to be the one to kill Grendel. Another motivation he had was sacrifice and obligation. Towards the end of the story, Grendel is older and not as strong as he was in the beginning. However, he still feels obligated to help his people as he did when he was younger. He knows that in his old age, he has enough left to kill the dragon at the end. In doing so though, he will have to sacrifice himself. He proves this in the lines, “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now, but I will fight again.” This is why I enjoyed this text so much. Beowulf was a great hero and I enjoyed reading about his battles and

Since the beginning of literature and storytelling, themes have been placed in stories to portray an overall lesson that the reader can relate to or take away from. There can be more than one theme in a story, but there is sometimes one main theme that the author wants the reader to understand and it is sometimes hard to choose what the bigger theme is. In Beowulf, like in many other stories, there is the obvious battle between good and evil. From the start of the epic the reader is introduced to Grendel, a descendant of Cain. Grendel represents the evil in this epic.…

In the movie and poem, Beowulf offers to fight Grendel himself after explaining that he owes Hrothgar a favor because Hrothgar helped his father. In the poem; “Beowulf’s last battle”, he wants to be remembered as strong. Beowulf stated that he never knew fear, as a youth, he fought in endless battles but now that he is old he will still fight and seek for the fame. Meaning, he undergoes a lot of battles back then and now that he is old, his age won’t stop him from fighting. However, in the movie; he becomes more of a monster when he turned on himself by not being courageous when he needed to be, by allowing Grendel’s mother and succumbing to his weakness of beautiful women he causes a fire-breathing dragon to attack his land.…
