The story of ¨The Devil and Tom Walker¨ begins with Tom walking in the woods and he meets the devil, also known as Old Scratch. The devil offers Tom a deal that he will give him treasure for his soul. Tom then thinks about the offer but declines because he doesn't want to share any of the profit with his wife who he constantly fights with. Irving writes ¨However Tom might have felt disposed to sell himself to the devil, he was determined not to do so to oblige his wife¨. (Irving 131) This quote goes to show how greedy Tom is really depicted to only have the devils deal to himself. His wife then hears about the devil's offer and goes into the woods to make another deal with him. Tom goes into the woods to find his wife and only find her apron and heart tied up in the tree. Irving writes, ¨He even felt something like gratitude towards the black woodsman who ,he considered, had done him a kindness.¨ (Irving 132) Tom thought that the devil did him a favor by getting rid of his wife so he can have the profit all to himself. Old Scratch then offers him a deal to open up a broker's shop. Long story short, the devil took Toms soul and turned all his riches to dust and his horses into skeletons. The dark side of human nature can change a persons personality for the worse as seen in the short story ¨A Tell Tale
