Everyone needs someone in their life to talk to or share problems and happiness with in their life. Friends are a very important part of our lives. Most of the time, true friends always have your back to support you in difficult times. It used to be very hard to make friends because there was no technology as there is now. Social media has made it very easy for everyone to become a friend in a matter of minutes. Deresiewicz notes “With the social-networking sites of the new century- Friendster and Myspace were launched in 2003, Facebook in 2004-the friendship circle has expanded to engulf the whole of social world…” (440). People are becoming friends through social media in nowadays. Facebook and Myspace are widely used to make friends and to reconnect with old friends, along with several other social media sites. This proves that, since social media like Facebook and Myspace are invented in this world, friendship has changed. People are no longer seeing each other face to face. They are communicating through messages and video chat instead. Some people only talk to someone for a couple of minutes and call them their friends, unlike in past becoming or making new friends wasn’t that easy or fast. In the past to call someone your best friend, you have to know that person very well, basically knowing almost everything about them. The new people that we are becoming friends with through social media are stranger, they are not real friends. The reason is that we only know them because of social media, we never had a face to face talk with them. Nowadays, we can’t even trust our friends because they are not real friends. We can’t call our friends family member because they are only our friends when we are online at same time. It does not hold values anymore. Making a friend use to be when two humans interacted and where strangers, gradually interacting with one another in person then becoming friends. I believe that the author discusses all the problems of fake friendship that we are facing today. Nowadays we don’t even have to ask our friends how they are feeling or where we going because they would post on social media sites first then informed their so called friends. Social media sites are more important than friends to some people, as social media sites are their priorities and friends come after. To some people social media is the only way they can make friends because they don’t have good communication skills to talk face to

Sherry Turkle’s essay “Connectivity and Its Disconnects” talks about how online connections may make people feel closer to each other yet pull them further apart because of things people do like multitasking. She further talks about this disorientation and feeling “alone and together” when interacting with people online, because she is talking to them and seeing them without them actually being there. Turkle gives an example of her friend, Ellen, who talks to her grandmother over skype and feels guilty because she feels as if connecting with her grandmother was “another task among multitasking”. This results in false intimacy and fake relationships. The question of whether social media and online connections have positive or negative outcomes…

Since social networking has become a necessity of human life, Thompson illustrates how people use these social networks as a way to keep in contact with friends and how it can create unrealistic expectations for those who are using it. Friendships nowadays are nothing more than an illusion because of the advance of technology; from the description of William Deresiewicz, author of the article “Faux Friendship.” Deresiewicz said that friendship has become both all and nothing when modern technology like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and other social media is destroying the friendship. Deresiewicz states that while people are friends with everybody, no matter if they know them or not, we have not understood the true value of a true friendship. The author compares the meaning of friendship between ancient time and the modern day. Back in the 18th century, Goethe and Schiller, a true friendship of literature and cultural movement; they support each other to the end of their movement.…

The Effects of Technology on Society In Maria Konnikova's article, "The Limits of Friendship" she explores the theoretical number of friends people can really have, also known as the Dunbar number, and whether social media has affected the way people perceive friend groups. In Konnikova’s article, “The Limits of Friendship,” technology has affected people’s social skills by allowing us to stay connected with people all over the world, but prevent us from making deeper face to face connections and prevent new generations from learning how to deal with real world problems and situations. In the article, Konnikova questions whether increasingly pervasive virtual interaction influences a person's friend groups for current and new generations. The theoretical number of friends the average person could have in his or her social group is called the Dunbar number.…

In this society, not too many people realize that their social media friendships are not the same as a true friendship. According from Curtis Silver, the author of “The Quagmire of Social Media Friendships”, he argues that these social media relationships cause conflicts amongst people. His inner beliefs notice how people do not overlook their relationship with their friends. Silver points out to his readers that the Dunbar number theory illustrates the desire to prove that this is essential to figuring out the sufficient logic behind relationships. The greatest challenge is coming to a decision whether or not that the difference corresponds to one another.…

They are connected all day, but are not sure if they had communicated. They become confused about companionship” (Turkle 17). This portrays Turkle’s point because it reflects that being there virtually is not the same as being there physically, it is a deception to one’s self and forms a false sense of friendships. This demonstrates that with teens connecting online with their friends, they doubt that they are actually their friends or with them. These friendships are an illusion that they are actually there with you…

Maria Konnikova agrees when she writes, “Isn’t it easier to have more friends when we have Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to help us cultivate and maintain them?” in her article “The Limits of Friendship” (237). She addresses an important question, does social media make it easier to have more friends? Her question also encompasses the idea of whether more friends on social media can help with people’s boredom or if it takes in-person interaction to cure this feeling. The answer to both of these are, simply, that having more friends on social media does not help people feel any less bored, and does not help them develop any personal relationships to help them feel a group identity.…

Comparably the development of internet technologies means that individuals can communicate online in various ways such as email, forums and webcam video, this means that it has become easier to maintain and even develop relationships online over long distances. The emergence of social networking websites has created new ways of developing and maintaining friendships online, this use of technologies may lead to the questioning of our understanding of friendship and the potentially damaging effects of excessive use of social networking sites (Brownlow, 2012, p. 266). Something else to consider is the cultural differences in understanding, friendship and how online friendships show this as most of the communication online is still conducted in English, as is the research in this area, if such research was limited to online methods, these populations would be excluded (Brownlow, 2012, p. 267). However, Bigelow and La Gaipa (1975) could not have known that sometime in the future children would be as likely to interact with online friends as friends in the playground, this is an example of the way new technologies and the changing way of how people interact, brings about new challenges for psychologists to address. We will now look at research on the structure and…
