Reality can be very deceiving, but until one sees with a 20/20 vision life will always appear obscure. In ‘The Examined Life” by Cornel West he says the following “Human beings are unable to ever gain any monopoly of truth capital T. We might have access to truth small t, but they’re fallible claims about truth”(West 3). Truth and reality come side by side not because they're easy to realize, but because they are hard to accept. One should always be prepared to acknowledge that their understanding may not always be true. Certain moments in life will reveal who one truly is. In the same interview, Cornel West goes on to say “The condition of truth is to allow suffering to speak”(West 3). Moments like this allow for one to fully express themselves through reaction. Suffering rewires the human mind and exposes its flaws. In “A case for Tragic Optimism” by Viktor Frankl he states “There, the “ individual differences” do not “blur” but, on the contrary, people became more different; people unmasked themselves”(Frankl 1).Auschwitz contained people that became driven by their own hunger and thus irrational actions took over. People will only reveal their inner selves when left with no other option. Internal suffering exposes much more than any other type. In Cornel’s “The Examined Life” he states the following “it takes more courage to examine the dark corners of your own soul than it does for a soldier to fight on the battlefield”(West 1). A soldier can prepare himself for war, but no one can for the truth about what one will discover about themselves.
