Everybody lied with this incident due to their weakness and remained the truth as a secret. The woodcutter was the incident’s witness yet he lied about it due to his greediness. The samurai’s wife is the only female character in this movie. In fact, there’s another female character which is the witch in the trial, who conveys the spirits of the dead samurai. However, the female character is a substitute of the samurai’s spirit. Her body provides the spirit a space to be seen by human. Her voice and actions were controlled by the dead samurai. Hence the female character in this movie was possessed by male characters. The Samurai’s wife were lacked of strength to fight and resist the attack of the bandit. Akira has made good use of these settings and I was amazed by the composition and lighting in this movie especially in the bamboo forest. The bamboo forest can considered as the most important settings in this movie as the whole murdering incident was happened in it. The scattered trees and bushes in the forest blocked the sunlight and naturally formed various changing of lighting in the forest scene. Sometimes the protagonists’ faces were casted with shadows and sometimes they were bright. Dark and bright has symbolised their mental status.
The scene and protagonist characteristic were solidified in Akira’s “Rashomon”. Not only repetition of the murder incident due to different witnesses, the woodcutter’s confession towards those men in ruined building has shown the audience different dimension of protagonists. Not one was perfectly correct or wrong, each protagonist contains evil
