It is often hard to read his mood and reactions in some situations, mostly humor. He is aware of this and has found ways to deal with it slightly. This social distance is most clearly evidenced when he is trying to pick up the young woman in the bar. When he is in the beginning of his relationship with Alicia he admits this aspect to her and tells her that him talking to girls usually winds up with him getting slapped. He doesn’t understand what is appropriate to say to people. Early in his illness Nash has a nervous twitch where he rubs his forehead with his index finger.
