From the Return to Homs and from Treeless Mountain Abdul Basset and Bin show their relationship with other people in different scene. For my essay, two scene attracted my attention where Basset is leading songs and dances (from Retour to Homs) and where Bin and her sister are sitting near the fire with their Grandma (from Treeless Mountain). I select these two scenes because they demonstrate the confident and friendship or concord relationship between the Abdul Basset and the crowd, also between Bin, her sister and their Grandma. Even if they are in different context, the cinematography and the editing done allows spectators to see similarity between these two scenes and to feel the friendship and confident relationship between characters. In Return to Homs, from 06:00 minutes to 06:30 minutes, there different important shots which show a confident relationship between Abdul Basset and the people around him. …show more content…
The scene starts by a long shot, where we can see Abdul Basset walking between the people and the sound of people’s acclamation to show their support and the camera follow his motion while he is walking. From that shot we can notice the confidence which Abdul Basset has about the support of people also about his security. Since the documentary is done in a revolution environment, where could be the government’s spies, it could be logical to think about a possible repression of the government to prevent the movement. However, that shot gives us the perception of a man who is assured about the support, and love of the crowd who surrounds him. There is a crosscutting at this level. The next shot is a Medium long shot. From his left, we can watch a man who is filming the movement from a building and there are other people to the next building who seem being observing Abdul’s movement in the street. Also, we can hear the sound of the cloud, which can tell us that the man is not far from where the movement or meeting is organized. At this level of the film, we do not know if the man who is filming from the building, is one of Abdul’s team. The next shot is a medium long shot which returns the image of the street, where Abdul Basset is leading the manifestation. From their back, we watch the crowd and Abdul Basset is in front them. We hear the shouting of the mass. The succession of these two shots, the shouting of the crowd and Abdul’s gestures allow to feel the confidence which Abdul has toward the mass and his security, also the united relationship which exists between Abdul Basset and the crowd. Similarly to Return to Homs film, in Treeless Mountain, from 1:19:06 to 1:20:00 there are several shots which show the confident and concord relationship which exist between Bin, Bin’s sister and their Grandma. After living a turmoil relationship (in the previous scenes) with her Big Aunt and after being deceive by the discussion which had their Big Aunty and their Grandpa, it could be logical to expect to see them undecided about the relationship between them and their Grandma. However, the image and the sound in this scene reveals the opposite. The scene starts by a medium close up shot, straight – on angle which shows Bin’s sister sitting with her Grandma, for whom we can see her noise and hand. The camera stays immobile, while it shows Bin from her profile right who is sitting between her sister and Grandma. The sound’s timber of Grandma, while she is asking her if she want potato, can reveal the lovely relationship which exist between them. Crosscutting. Next, there is a Close – up shot, which shows the woods fire and we can hear the sound of firewood which are burning. There is no voice of dialogue, but the absence of dialogue and the noise of fire can allow spectators to feel the friendship relationship, which exists between grandma and her granddaughters. Cut. Then an extreme close-up shot, we see the hands of Grandma, we hear the sound produced
