3rd Marking Period Quarterly
Many countries including the U.S. and USSR had major impacts on the Cold War. The Cold War effected economies as well because of the uprising of communism in Soviet Union and China. Many people were scared that it would come to their country too. This time period was also a new age of technology to help countries gather information to see who could be the most powerful and smartest country. There were many wars and operations that played a role in this era.

The Soviet Union was a Communist country which meant there was no private business allowed. American people were afraid that this would happen to them. They had many foreigners in their country which caused people to start stereotyping the immigrants. Mobs attacked suspected extremists, abused immigrants, and committed crimes in the name of righteousness. Joseph McCarthy was afraid that this would happen in the U.S., so he decided to come up with his own practicing of accusing people who he thought had communist. People referred to this as McCarthyism or the Second Red Scare.
McCarthyism was a terrible thing for the United States because it made us look like we were not able to control what was going on in our country. McCarthyism could destroy a person’s life. If you were falsely accused of being communist you would lose your job, go to jail, and most people would not want to be around you. If you were caught with someone who was accused of being a communist they would assume you’re a communist as well. McCarthy put fear in American’s eyes due to the power he had to arrest people and get them fired from their jobs. It became known as blacklisting if you had list of people who were believed to have communist ties.
McCarthyism began to die down once the special counsel of the U.S. Army, Joseph Welch, called Joseph McCarthy. Welch was able to expose the false accusations of McCarthy once they had hearings on whether communism had broken into the U.S. Military. Welch’s voiced attack marked the end of McCarthy’s clout during the anticommunist panic of the Red Scare in America.
In conclusion if it wasn’t for the U.S. and USSR doing the things during the cold war, we wouldn’t have knowledge we have in today’s world. Things such as Berlin Airlift, Marshall Plan, Truman Doctrine and many more great events helped the U.S. become the nation that they are today. Also the important role that Senator Joseph McCarthy played during the Cold War and in politics were very much needed in order for the U.S. to move forward in the
