A holocaust is described as destruction caused by fire and nuclear war. From 1939 to 1945 the german holocaust took place and many jews had to fight and escape from the Nazi’s dictorship. This caused conflict as many Jews were constantly killed and forced to stay in concentration camps. In the history of the United States an American Holocaust occurred when many Indians were being killed and mistreated because the objective of Christopher Columbus and other Europeans was to find gold. In the prologue Ellie Wiesel a famous author points out that forgetting the important events of history is often a danger. Forgetting important events not only affects the victims but it also affects us as human beings because we ignore important information and do not find out the real truth that is hidden in important events. Ellie Wiesel points out that “The danger lies in forgetting, Forgetting, however, will not effect the dead. Should it triumph, the ashes of yesterday will cover our hopes for tomorrow.” Some parts of the history of the United States have been ignored. For instance in elementary and high school students learn that Christopher Columbus was a great explorer and heroe however the dark truth of this “heroe” is hidden. For example many people tend to portray and see Christopher Columbus as a heroe someone who discovered the Americas. Many celebrate and see October 12 as a holiday without knowing the real truth. As I continue to learn about Christopher Columbus I wonder and ask myself why he thought he was in Asia when in reality he was in the Americas.
