Contemporary dance allows more free and dynamic movements which allowed their movements to not have specific right or wrong doings. This style of dance allowed more emotion to be shown through the actual passion of dance (Dance Facts, 2017). This style of dance was very eye catching to others who wanted to express themselves freely and to not follow the rules of ballet. Martha Graham, Isadora Duncan and Merce Cunningham, who are contemporary icons, wanted to show the world freedom in their dances and explore outside of the human body's movement capabilities (Dance Facts, 2017). Contemporary needed to be well known throughout the world, so Martha Graham founded a contemporary based dance company. The Martha Graham Dance Company was founded in 1926 (Martha Graham’s Center of Contemporary Dance Inc). Martha Graham's influential dance company is known well throughout the world. Many people around the world have came to the dance company to learn the style of contemporary. The works from the dance company have been seen by over fifty countries. African music allowed the style of dance evolve from the instruments used (Thelonious Monk, Institute of Jazz). Jazz dance grew more in the 1950s, but the jazz style only consisted of tap dance. (Basch Solutions, LLC, 2016). Jazz began to develop when other jazz dance styles were announced such as the Cake Walk, Black Bottom, Charleston, Jitter bug and Swing dancing. Jazz began to grow due to the performances of these different styles. The cakewalk was a popular stage performance danced by many. This became popular, which allowed jazz dance to evolve into how it is now in the twenty first century (Basch Solutions, LLC, 2016). Jazz soonly became to emerge sporadically when it was formed in New Orleans. New Orleans was a port where new people from different backgrounds who would integrate with new people so, this was perfect for the transaction of the cultural dance style (Thelonious Monk, Institute of Jazz). Jazz developed more and is now seen as musical theatre, which can be seen in many music videos, musicals and popular tv shows. Many great jazz advocates such as Jerome Robbins choreographed musicals like Peter Pan and The West Side Story (Basch Solutions, LLC, 2016). These musicals such as Peter Pan was performed more than 150 times on Broadway which, allows many people to have a chance and see the wonderful choreography and dance style of jazz.
