the last several years research has proven that fish, shellfish, and crabs in the Virginia and Maryland bays and rivers have shown positive for containing harmful toxins (Horton, 2003).
Since the bay runs throughout six states: Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia, many people on the east coast are affected each year. One of the thousands of pathogens affecting humans throughout the bay is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis also known as ALS. When ALS enters in the human body it kills motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, which slowly paralyzes the body (McAuliffe, 2011). ALS is known for affecting people with certain illnesses, but is highly known for affecting those with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson disease.

Some of the many chemicals that are polluting the Chesapeake Bay are polychlorinated biphenyls (PBCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pesticides, and personal care/pharmaceutical products. PBCs are a flame retardant that cannot legally be made in the USA, but are legally imported and pollute the bay about evenly throughout. When gas, oil, or coal is burned, PAHs can be formed. PAHs are found mostly around Baltimore and near the Anacostia and Elizabeth rivers. Since agriculture is widely practiced around the bay, pesticides are leaked into it.…

Ninety to ninety-five percent of people diagnosed have sporadic ALS, which is the most common form. A person could have no history of health issues, and could still get sporadic ALS. The leftover five to ten percent of cases is Familial, which is inherited by family members. For those who have Familial, a fifty percent chance of passing it to offspring is at risk. Jean-Martin Charcot, French neurologist, discovered this disease in 1869 (“What is ALS?”).…

Native species are species that have evolved to in a particular region over a long period of time, and have adapted to live in that region’s climate and habitat. These species live in this region with all the other species to form an ecosystem. Non native species on the other hand, are species that are introduced to an area they're not used to by humans, either by accident, or intentionally (getthegreen). Invasive species are a type of non native species, that are very likely to cause harm to the ecosystem (NOAA). Concussions and head trauma are the main reasons for ALS and CTE’s because of how the head is getting hit it is causing the brain to be thrown around and bleed or release a toxic protein that poisons the brain. Boys and girls are affected differently than each other because guys have stronger necks and are physically stronger than girls are it gives guys an advantage to not get concussed so easily. How would you react if I told you there are fish that have adapted to toxic waste? Shocked, confused, amazed, astounded or curious may be the thought that pops in your head but there are fishes like that and they are located in the waters of New Jersey. In the Lower Passaic River and Newark Bay shellfish and other fishes have adapted to the toxic waste from the manufactured chemicals of DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) or Agent Orange (dangerous toxic chemical used in the U.S Vietnam War) in the water. The Atlantic killifish are a common fish that grow a tolerance for the toxic of New Jersey waters. “The new study found that over just a few decades, distinct populations of killifish independently developed similar genetic adaptations…

In this case study, scientists researched Lepomis microlophus (redear sunfish), Lepomis macrochirus (bluegill sunfish), and Microterpus salmoides (largemouth bass) that were collected from control ponds, natural lakes, and stormwater ponds in Orlando Florida. The fish were analyzed heavy metals such as zinc, lead, copper, cadmium, and nickel. The purpose of the study was to determine if the fish from the stormwater ponds had higher concentrations of these metals, and if there was a difference in the concentrations of the metals in each of the species (Campbell 1994). Stormwater ponds not only improve surface water quality and flood protection, they are also required in some stormwater management systems including central Florida. The St.…

Results and Discussion Shellfish is considered a good indicator for environmental pollution with heavy metals, simply because it can accumulate high levels of these metals. However, these organisms are considered valuable source for animal derived protein, vitamins and essential trace elements, especially for people living nearby sea. Thus, estimating the residual levels of these metals, in particular the toxic ones, assessment of the possible human health risks and trying to find effective reduction strategies of the heavy metal load are major tasks of food and environmental hygienists. Estimation of heavy metal concentrations and their correlations in the examined shellfish Lead (Pb)…
