I chose the quote by Alice Walker, “Don’t wait around for other people to be happy for you. Any happiness you get you’ve got to make yourself.” One part of the phrase, “Don’t wait around for other people to be happy for you…” this part of the quote told us that you should not want only other people to be happy and loving towards you. In the second part of the phrase, “Any happiness you get you’ve got to make yourself.” It tells us that you should believe in yourself and you should follow your dreams. This quote means literally that you should not want other people to encourage you to make yourself confident, but you should drive to make yourself happy and should know that you are special. Alice Walker’s message was very indirect from the way

in all of your works of life? ‘ (Ryan) This quote is excellent because it explains that if you can look at yourself with pride, knowing that you worked your absolute hardest to do what you wanted, then you have succeeded in building yourself a good and fulfilled life. The Story “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, has a way of developing Dee’s character through indirect presentation which provides meaning to the story. Dee demonstrates on how she is greedy, by taking the quilts and saying they were hers, when she said they were originally out of style. Indirect Presentation develops Dee’s character, because it shows how greedy she is and how when her mom said she couldn’t have them, she got mad which shows how she usually gets her way all the time.. Early in their lives, her mother “offered Dee (Wangero) a quilt when she went away to college. Then she told me they were old-fashioned,out of style”.…

Heritage is often defined as “practices or characteristics that are passed down through the years, from one generation to the next. ” The short story Everyday Use by Alice Walker tells a tale of a family of a mother and her two daughters, one of whom denies who she really is and the other who readily accepts it. Conflict of self-identification with one’s heritage is the main theme portrayed through the classic mother-daughter relationship, as Wangero, the eldest daughter, takes family-owned possessions and turn them into decorations, as though they have no true meaning, all for the sake of proving her false heritage. From the beginning to the end of the story, Wangero denies her true heritage and family in favor of a more idealistic heritage she’s manufactured for herself.…

Walker begins the story by giving a brief overview of his personal life, and explores the reasons that made him change his mind from writing about his own life and decides to write about his blind father. He then introduces his father and how he lost his sight at the age of 12 years while climbing the stairs of Chicago brownstone. The author utilizes series of flashbacks to give an account of his father’s life from childhood to present. In the end, however, the writer realizes that he has focused too much on “the mechanics of blindness” and not “the mechanics of being.” And thus, he admits that he got all his accounts wrong.…

The point of view in the story “Everyday Use,” by Alice Walker plays a big part. Throughout the story, one of Mama’s daughters came to visit. The way Mama and Maggie see her is not in a very pleasant way. In fact, they are scared to tell her no when it comes to anything. From Mama’s perspective Dee seems like this rude, stuck up, spoiled child because she had the opportunity to go out and expand her education, while Mama and Maggie continued to live their lives on the farm.…
